Book Preview: Missed Connections: Love, Lost & Found

Missed ConnectionsMissed Connections: Love, Lost & Found (2011), by Sophie Blackall, is the author’s first book for adults. In it the author/illustrator of children’s books shares classified ads based on ships that pass in the night. Three of them are stories with happy endings.

Each tale includes simple but expressive ink and watercolor illustrations. This is a unique book about missed opportunities that reminds us to take a chance. Here is an excerpt from an NPR interview with Ms. Blackall:

“In one of her drawings, Blackall depicts the following post: ‘Tree with legs. Nice pants. I’d like to see more of you. Btw, your dog winked at me.’ In her illustration, Blackall shows a man completely obscured by the giant pine tree he holds in his hands.

‘This was around Christmastime, and it was a Christmas tree, I’m assuming.’ Blackall says. ‘We’ve all seen that on the street – it’s such a great image of someone obscured by a tree, with just legs underneath. And the dog winking was a perfect touch.'”
