The title of today’s book preview, He’s Gone (2013), by Deb Caletti, grabbed my attention right away. It’s everyone’s – young or old, male or female – worst nightmare: the disappearance of a loved one. In this tense story, Dani and Ian are divorced from Mark and Mary, and married to each other. It’s not perfect. Dani’s daughter Abby is OK with her stepfather Ian, but his daughters Kristen and Bethy blame Dani for their parents’ breakup.
Now the Kellers live on a houseboat in Seattle, near the scene of their previous marital drama. After a tempestuous start to their new relationship, they have brought the issues from their previous marriages into this one. On the morning after a Saturday night party at Ian’s office, Dani wakes up with a hangover to discover that Ian is missing. She wracks her brain and searches her soul for clues that could bring him back. In the painful process, she finds herself.
