Visible City (2014) by Tova Mirvis is a new novel, just out this week. It’s about harried young mother Nina, a former lawyer turned stay-at-home mom to three-year-old Max and infant Lily, who is bored and restless when she isn’t busy and exhausted. While her husband Jeremy is working late at a legal firm, Nina takes to spying on the neighbors through her child’s toy binoculars, imagining the idyllic marriage of her older neighbors. Then she sees more than she bargained for.
When Nina runs into her neighbors face to face, her personal space shrinks rapidly, and her imaginings turn into realities. It seems that everyone in the neighborhood is connected to everyone else.
Here is a story about how quickly our fancies can turn into realities, and a window into the transitions we experience at different points in a lifetime, the choices we make, and the consequences that ensue. Anyone who has peeped on their neighbors will feel a twinge of recognition.
