An Untitled Lady (2013) by Nicky Penttila is not a traditional Regency romance. It is the story of Madeline Wetherby, a woman with working class roots who was brought up a lady. Orphaned as a young child and rescued from an abusive uncle, she was promised to marry the heir of her godfather, the Earl of Shaftsbury. But the earl’s plan was kept a secret, and when he died, Maddie was left with no one to protect her.
When the Earl’s heir, Deacon, arranged for her to marry his brother Nash, the two embarked on a quest for love. It was 1819 and Manchester, England was divided by strife as workers struggled for their rights. Maddie’s struggle for a voice and independence is compared to the larger struggle of the workers of England as they fight for parliamentary reform, a fight in which Madeline plays a key role. This story is a unique blend of history and romance.
